This twin-engine version of the Farman M.F.11 was built in 1916. One hundred fifty-two were built by the A.E.R firm near Torino. The S.P.4 entered service in autumn 1917 and served through the end of the war, a remarkable testament to the longevity of the M.F.11 design. [1]

The S.P.4 equipped four squadriglia until the middle of 1918.[3]
