Société de Moteurs Salmson of Billancourt specialized in producing radial aircraft engines, but in 1916 they decided to try their hand at aircraft design with the unusual S.M.1. Greater success was met with the more conventional Salmson 2, which became one of the top two-seaters in late 1917 through the end of the war.[1]
