The Phönix D.IIa was a simple upgrade of the Phönix D.II with a 230hp Hiero engine built as Series 422. Forty-eight were built, but shortages of the 230hp engine forced twenty of them -- almost half -- to be built with the 200hp engine, the same as its predecessor. They reached the front in late May 1918 and served with eight Fliks. Ten were transferred to the Navy and saw colorful repainting.  Both wings had ailerons and they were connected by a simple strut.
