The Macchi L.2 was a lightened version of the Macchi L.1 with a larger engine, which should have given it a nice boost in performance. However, only ten were completed before attentions shifted to the Macchi M.3. [2][5] After their delivery in May 1916, their performance was found to be lacking, and it degraded quickly with age. As a result, the were relegated to training in 1917.[1]

It is likely that the Italians copied the changes made in creating the Lohner Tl as a big element in creating the L.2.
