In order to improve the speed of the Aviatik D.I a special version without bracing wires was created for testing and trials. Sixteen Aviatik D.IIs were completed and testing began in August 1917 with various combination of armament and radiators. Two were sent for front-line evaluation in February 1918, where the type was found to be quite speedy. Another five were sent to the front in July 1918 for further evaluation. They probably did not see combat, and the type was not scheduled for further production. [1]
