The Pfalz D.VIII prototypes were built with no less than three rotary engines: the 160hp Siemens-Halske, the 160hp Oberursel, and the 140hp Goebel, but it was the Siemens-Halske version that was selected for production. Forty were completed and nineteen were at the Front in August 1918 where they were being assessed in operational trials by Jastas 29 and 56.
