The ubiquitous Brandenburg C.I was originally developed by Hansa und Brandenburgische Flugzeugwerke AG, but even more of the planes were built by Phönix and UFAG. Eventually almost a quarter of all Austro-Hungarian planes built were Brandenburg C.I variants, with about 1,200 delivered. It was built in 20 different series by the three companies, with a wide variety of armament mounts, adjustments in proportions, radiator mounts, and engines.

It was well-liked by its crews, with plenty of power, stable flight characteristics, and increasingly powerful engines.
